St. David's Street.

I heard from a friend that your life went out with a bang!
Brunswick Street had never seen anything like it:all jazz and light.
My rainbow man, holder of music deliverer of the blues.
A carriage drawn by graceful horses sang Dixie
past the greedy cafes.
Your coffin held under the blue surrounded by trumpets and song.
People danced and tripped down hipster town
past De Vincenzo and the Sila Cafe.
This was not a crying day for the lost
but a celebration for the man from St. David's Street.

I remember when I first met you,
you greeted me with your tough smile
and battered boxers hand
and held me gently.
We talked about the blues and laughed at the world.

Brassy Lena while pouring cold beer under the dim light
quoted Kazantakis,
"You want to know what life is? Its the full catastrophe
the whole damn thing".

Those nights packed in like sardines immersed in smoke
as I danced like the midnight oil.

Now I'm heading for New Orleans to find Doctor John
and while there I'll think of you
as the bourbon kisses my lips.
